  • As an open water swimmer, I feel like it’s really important for everyone to realize that Kara and Nate were able to do that without swim training because (a) they are super fit and experienced with facing intense physical and endurance challenges and (b) they had a safety team entirely focused on them who continually coached them all the way to the beach. I say this because every year there are an awful lot of underprepared swimmers who attempt the Alcatraz swim in big races or group swims who need rescuing. If you cannot go into this in the same conditions as you just saw in this video, don’t give up on ever doing the swim but definitely postpone and TRAIN first.

    • @Katrina Hereford No need to be Karen. The video showed two very fit young adults swim to Alcatraz with a rescue boat, professional guidance, and the coast guard alerted beforehand. What exactly was misrepresented?

  • I consider myself a pretty great swimmer, the fact that these two did this challenge with very minimal preparation/training is very impressive to me. The waves pulling you back, the cold water, exhaustion, the adrenaline etc. Respect Kara and Nate and congratulations on this achievement!

  • FUN FACT: I learnt this when visiting Alcatraz... prisoners got hot showers (it was one of the very few or even the only prison that did this) so the difference between the water temperature of the shower and the temperature of the bay would be greater. This made it even harder for them to make that deadly swim!

    • M G. - Sorry, as true as that might be, the reasoning behind it sounds like bullshit to me. Fun fact tho (supposedly), Al Capone, assuming no introduction needed, was amongst the first transfer of prisoners on the ship to Alcatraz, and as he wanted to be prisoner 001, meaning the 'first', he had his cronies bully others away, so that he was first on the ship, not realizing that, the last one on, was assigned prisoner 001, and as being first on board, he was the last to disembark, so he did not get that distinction. I don't know if that is actually true, but so the story goes. Either way, it's a good story as well.

I signed up for swim lessons since one of my goals for myself is to learn to swim (and I finally got over the embarrassment of learning to swim as an adult) and I’m kind of nervous, but if you guys can conquer swimming from ALCATRAZ I’m sure I can conquer the local pool 💪🏿 Love your videos! 💕

  • As an professional open water swimmer, i gotta say they did amazing! Doing this distance in that time is mind blowing for me if you dont train for it. Moreover i feel like a lot of people who are doing that are underestimating the salty water and the temperature, because even if you are moving your hands will go numb after some time and if you panic in that stage during the swim you will be in mortal danger.

We were in SF a few days after you guys and went to Alcatraz for the first time, so seeing this after being there only a few weeks, just added so much to this video. • That was crazy. The level of natural athleticism you both have is amazing. You never did any real open water swims and you attempted this? Sure, mental game will take you far, but only just so far...It's incredibly impressive you were able to do this. I do worry about risks you may take to keep upping the game, either because you are addicted to seeking your breaking point or because you feel like you need to do it for the channel.
