  • Does gravity exist? If there was no matter, as there was absolutely nothing at all, that we could observe and conclude is being acted upon by gravity, would gravity still exist? If things ceased to change over time, would time still exist? Is time a constant or is it only applicable if there is something to observe going through time?

  • A fun question to ask ourselves is this: Due to language, what thoughts are we simply not capable of thinking? Language is both a catalyst to knowledge, and a hard shell blocking us from the progress. My theory is that language has a theoretical limit of recursions. At some point, language becomes either too simple or too vast to progress knowledge any further. We are able to know what an atom is because we have a word for it, and while we were able to create more words for the protons and electrons, and the quarks and so on. At some point we will run out of meaningful words to describe things. When you add the fact we use words to represent multiple other words or meanings, one has to expect that we will eventually run out of words to describe concepts that are meaningful and therefor be unable to create new concepts. We have relied thus far on being to use a combination of words to describe new discoveries and concepts to great success and that has blinded us to the fact that unless somehow humans were capable of limitless knowledge, eventually our understanding of everything will become to vast for us to understand. In fact, everything I wrote just now is thankfully potentially digestible information that most people could read and draw a conclusion on, but how many iterations of this concept of words on words can we do before you can no longer understand with any level of usefulness.

  • This is silly. "things" are just names for certain piles of atoms. Names are there for us to be able to communicate. And if u want to know, is a thing a thing? U test this by removing enough atoms from a "thing", until none of random 100 people don't recognize it as "thing".

  • Interesting. I'm not edgy enough to say something doesn't exist. I'm an ontological anti-realist and mereological universalist. But that might be because I'm not religious. And clearly, our understanding of the universe is largely shaped by language. However, our tendency toward realism largely relies on a measurement of an object's objective utility to us, not its composition. A chair is as good as a rock as long as you can sit on it, and one language may have the same word for both.

  • "Chairness" is an emergant proporty. Thier is no object called a chair. Only things that share the atribute chairness. Does a milk crate stop being a milk crate when I sit on it? No its just that milk crates happen to be chair-y.

  • This trick is simple: There is no crane. The whole time there has only been a piece of paper folded in such a way that its shape looked like a crane. That's why the crane seemed to have vanished but it hasn't, it was never there to begin with. And I dispute that being in a garage is a property of a car; the place where an object is located is not a property of that object. Properties is what makes objects distinguishable. The same object once in place A and once in place B is still the same object, it still shares exactly the same properties which make up this object, its location is irrelevant.

  • Dear Vsauce, The first you have to do is to define the word exist before you raise questions about existence. Those questions are irrelevant without a rigorous, unequivocal definition of your key term.

  • I am confused. I will just arbitrary assign random names to stuff that I can use for my own egoistical interest; I will use the relative system to specify the object that comes to my mind in that moment and I won't care about if it fits a system determined by people who just overthink that stuff. Things are arbitrary and stupid. I think humanity is to egoistical to even comprehend that we invent these arbitrary things to name stuff and we think these are absolute... But it is not... These are just made up stuff so we can communicate things that we barely know BUT that we comprehend nothing.

  • In this context it's also interesting to see how programming languages deal with these exact same issues/questions. For example, you can have a string "chair" (or also "Chair" or "CHAIR" or "ChAiR" etc), you can have an abstract chair object (with a set of possible properties) and also a concrete instance of that chair object (with some or all of those properties).
